While underway to Puerto Chiapas, after our forestay detached we reduced sail coverage, the next item on the list of immediate troubles was our engine’s cooling system. We had just recently replaced the worn impeller of our raw water pump while anchored in Acapulco, so the we figured the culprit was elsewhere.

After our unexpected rigging and engine problems on passage from Acapulco, we anticipated the worst was yet to come as we slowly limped in to Chiapas in the wee hours of the morning. But Neptune seemed to grant us a reprieve, delivering us safely to a wonderful little harbor at the very southern extreme of Mexico’s Pacific Coast; Marina de Chiapas!

Two weeks ago, while we were catching up on neglected work and restocking Rua Hatu while anchored in Acapulco Bay, two tropical depressions were forming off the Pacific coast of southern Mexico. We scoured the charts for good bays that allowed for maximum wind and fetch (short, uncomfortable wind waves) protection.
